Week 6 Story: Georgie's Voyage

Georgie's Voyage
Hi, I am Georgie. I am from Portland and I have a story to tell you. I was just a young boy from Portland that was just doing normal middle school kid things. I was playing sports, playing outside, and I especially played in the rain. Rain was my favorite weather as you could do so many different things in the rain that weren’t possible on a dry day. I raced boats a lot when it rained. My brother, Carl, and I would always race boats and he would always win, but I got one win and that win ended up changing my life.
When I beat my brother, it was like a curse was broke or something of that nature. I felt something grab me by my ankles and it startled me. I turned around and saw a group of small beings, about 2 feet tall, that all looked like clowns. For some reason, they were all holding balloons in the shape of boats, but I couldn’t get passed the fact they were so tiny. The clowns began to chant, “Sail with us!”. This was concerning but I made the decision to be adventurous and take up their offer. They lead me into swear which was a little nasty, but it was like I was in a trance. The number of clowns that were surrounding me was too much to just leave and get away. As I made my way into the swear and small ship appeared and the foggy, musty air of the sewer. The clowns lead me onto the ship and named me captain and we set sail.
I had no idea where we were sailing to, but the clowns gave me a map and helped me navigate. The clowns could do everything as they controlled the ship with ease and made the trip as smooth as it possibly could go until the last 15 minutes. A shadow casted over the ship and I could hear the water begin to get angry and waves began to crash the ship from all sides. I looked up and there it was, the king of all Clowns, Dimewise.
It was the scariest sight I had ever seen!! He was at lest 40 feet tall! The small clowns began to run in a frenzy. The clowns had no idea what to do other than run around and hope Dimewise became confused. Dimewise was focused and began to wreak havoc on the ship. I didn’t know what to do except try to fight back. I threw a metal bucket at Dimewise, but that only made him direct his attention at me. Dimewise reached down and picked me up and it was like I was a small doll. I was tossed and thrown around to the point of me being sick to my stomach. Dimewise then stopped. It was like time had stood still as Dimewise stared into my soul then did the unthinkable, threw me in his mouth. Dimewise ate me and that is pretty much the last thing I remembered until now.
Yes, I know you may be wondering how I am telling you this story. Well, there is one answer that you may expect. I still in the belly of the beast. I am sending this through an email in hope of someone defeating the beast. I will survive as long as I need but time is slowly running out for me and the couple other guys in here with me.

Author’s Note: I based my story off of a couple of stories. The first is from the stories of Sindbad. I used the story of the third voyage as a giant eats the captain and creates some turmoil of the ship. I also used the tiny beings concept from the story as well with the small clown characters of the Sindbad story as well. I also used the story of the novel IT. The use of the clowns and the boats in the rain both came from that novel. I used the character names as well with Georgie and the clown’s name.

Reading Notes: Sindbad: Fifth Voyage

Today, I have decided to continue the story of Sindbad and continue to read through his voyages. I decided to analysis the beginning of his fifth voyage today. The story I read on tuesday was so well written and fun to read I had to continue to read some of his other stories that were in the collection. This one stood out amongst the few other ones that were available. This story has a quality that the previous ones did and it has a first person point of you. I will reiterate what I said in the fact that i love to have characters talk to me or have myself feel like I am in the head of the character which I definitely am in this case. It seems throughout all of the stories I have read, Sindbad is always having a issue with something that is going in this voyage. This story is no different from the rest of them. Sindbad's voyages seem to always go awry and this story doesn't take long. One of the many favorite parts that I have from this story is in the second paragraph as the suspense of the story already began as the parent birds that would attack the ship and crew and the captain knew exactly the situation. The story gets into action immediately and I am always up for action as quick as possible in stories. As long as the background of a story is decent I am fine, but most of the time stories are a little slow for me. The story continues with the action and suspense and that is awesome for me as a reader. The final paragraphs are extremely dramatic. Sindbad seems to be, always, flirting with death and he is choked out by his enemy as the story comes to an end. He survives, somehow, again as the bird lets go of him as he is near death from not being able to breath. He is tortured all night by the monsters and was given a glimmer of hope but was brought right back in when there was some hope to survive.

Reading Notes: Sinbad: Third Voyage

The reading I decided to for this week is the stories of Sinbad. The specific story I decided to do notes on for the day is his Third Voyage. What caught my eye with the stories is that the stories were being told in first person. Sinbad is talking to the reader throughout the story and it is cool to read and feel like the main character and star of the show is speaking directly at you instead of other characters in the story. That connection means a lot to me as a reader as I like to have a connection to the main character and not feel like I am on the outside of a group looking over them. The story itself is a great story. The savages that took Sinbad's ship were small beings, but strength comes in numbers as they swarmed the ship. I got a slight chuckle as two feet tall and red fur savages took over a ship and took it hostage with no problem whatsoever. The terror that the crew had was crazy to read as you would think a burly ship crew wouldn't be scared at all of a few small savages but they must have been truly terrifying. The giant comes into the picture and I truly got wide eyed reading that. When the giant took the captain and roasted him, I got a little scared myself. That is one of my fears is dying to a fire as it would be slow and painful. The thought of being roasted over a fire for someone else's food is creepy and gives me the chills. The end of the story was interesting though. The giant ate and scared the crew to death, but when he awoke in the morning nothing happened. My thought was that the giant would have "breakfast" but he left the castle with no attempt to do so which was odd, especially after the events of the night prior.

Storybook Plan

A main theme/topic I want to go with for my Storybook is a sense of inclusivity and being the underdog. Jovi is going to, try to, be the dog that shows the world how to treat it and be a good person through funny stories. He will also teach that everyone has the chance to be great no matter the obsicles that are in the way. A few stories that i will take some inspiration from are:
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
http://nisbah.com/summer_reading/ff_mice_and_men_steinbeck.pdf
Stories of Hercules
https://www.history.com/topics/ancient-history/hercules
I going to use a third person to not confuse Jovi with a human character. I have a few story ideas that I discussed in a blog post earlier in my blog. A few more ideas have come to mind such as Jovi playing golf and becoming a world star golfer. Jovi will also be a voice of reason in a sensitive story about the death of my grandfather. Jovi will be the example a human that should exist in everyone so that the world will one day become peaceful and no one will have to worry about needs that they absolutely need. Jovi will be my story of the person I wish I was. There will be sad, happy, and many other emotions that will come through the stories and I hope to entertain all who read them!

Week 5 Story: The Cat and the Bat

Once upon a time, there was a cat named Gerald. Gerald was your ordinary cat. He would wake up, eat, meow and sleep in that order. Gerald never fazed from that schedule. Gerald had never deviated from the schedule. Gerald was the most normal and cuddly cat a family could have. Then one day, something weird happened to Gerald. Gerald broke his schedule and began to cause chaos in the household.
Gerald's owner couldn't believe his eyes. His cat that was the perfect housecat had become a menace to the house. Gerald began to tear things up and not eat. Gerald would not stop meowing and his sleep schedule was thrown out of whack as well. Gerald's owner decided to make a decision, "Gerald, you need to leaving this household til you nehave and get your schedule back on track!". Gerald was saddened but understood. Gerald gathered his toys and some tuna and left. He walked a good 5 miles and found a tree. The tree was perfect for a nap as it had a lot of shade and no one was by it, or so Gerald thought.
While Gerald was about to doze off, something swooped down at him. It was a bat!!! Gerald was startled by the bat and yelled at the bat, "Who are you?!". The bat didn't say anything at first but eventually replied, "I am the one and only Sam!". Gerald began to roll around and laugh. Gerald was expecting a scary or something like Dracula but Sam was the last name he was expecting. "What? I am going to cause you so much pain your bag of toys!!" screamed the bat and went for the bag and stopped in his tracks. "What? You see a ghost or something?", said Gerald. Sam was shaking and told Gerald he would do whatever Gerald wanted.
Sam had found a bat-like toy and was concerned that he would become a toy as well. Sam told Gerald he would do anything he wanted and there was only one thing that Gerald wanted and that was normalcy in his life at home. "That is it? I surprised you didn't ask for food, another cat, or a luxurious cat world?"questioned Sam. Gerald immediately clapped back with a series of reasons and one being Sam must really want to be a toy.
Sam followed the request as quick as he could. With the snap of Sam's claws, Gerald was sent back home. Gerald felt something was different which was good. The feeling he had when he left was one he didn't want to feel again. Gerald made a knocking sound on the door and his owner opened the door and was in awe of Gerald being there and looking good as new. Gerald would live a happy life as his world was back together and wasn't going to fall apart ever again.
This is Gerald the Cat https://images.app.goo.gl/33STVzznwfX3MQY96
Author's Note: I got my idea from the story of The Ghost of who was Afraid of being Bagged. The story have similarities in the fact that both involve a character leaving home and being brought back due to another character based on a scare tactic. I also got the title idea from Cat in the Hat but just switched to Bat to allow for more flexibility with characters in the story and for a play on words effect.

Reading Notes: The Ghost who was Afraid of Being Bagged

I read through the story and thought it was put together extremely well. When I was choosing what to read for this week, the title of this story really caught my eye. I read it last to make sure the thoughts and details that I had from it were fresh in my mind and not drained out of my head after reading multiple other stories. The story is an amazing tale of just a simple barber that, in a surprising turn, gains a whole lot of money and scares away ghosts which is funny to think about. People are supposed to be afraid of ghosts and not want to scare them all by themselves. The barber used an interesting tactic to deal with the ghost and later the uncle of said ghost.
The intimidation that the barber used was the fact that he would put the ghost in a bag. This seems like a weak intimidation attempt a ghost, supposedly, can faze and move through objects but a bag would be able to stop the ghosts. The item in that bag that was truly menacing was the looking-glass. This glass gave the ghosts a look at themselves and the meer fact of seeing their reflection caused them to be scared and do what the barber wanted them to do. The barber did a great job in getting a lot of money and supplies for himself and for his wife who he had left because he did not have the means to support his wife and family.
The story is a really interesting tale that had many twists and turns that weren't expected from me when I read through the story. I never would have thought a barber would be able to take on ghosts and be so successful. The promise made by the husband was to come back only if he was rich which you would not think would be possible with a barber's pay but the fact he was able to return to his wife and be happy with the money and the support that he can now give his entire family.
A more childish version of the story https://images.app.goo.gl/5fLpKKgVbMtJCcvZ7

Reading Notes: The Origin of Opium

I tried a new strategy this week when picking out the story I was going to read. I usually read the first paragraph or two of the stories then decide based on of that. This week I have decided to read the title of each story only and based off the title choose the story and stick with that story. The story I chose was The Origin of Opium. This choice was based on the fact of the impact that Opium has had across the world and especially in Asia and Middle East. I am a big history junkie and seeing this gave me a flashback to high school history and got me really excited to read and do some exploring in the story.
Now to the actual story, the story was sort of a surprise from the impression I got from the title. The story was more of an actual origin, in a folklore sense, of opium compared to what my mind created the idea that it would actually be about opium only. The story was a fantastic story that I really enjoyed with a lot of details and cool characters. One of the best parts of the story was the talking animals. I am a huge animal guy and the thought of animals talking made very content with what was going on throughout the story. The mouse was an interesting animal to choose to use as the animal that was going to speak with Rishi. The mouse then transforms into a cat and then a dog. This was surprising as that doesn't usually happen in stories as characters usually stay one type of animal in most stories that I have read, but this story was a nice adjustment and fresh story to read. The final transformation to the ape was surprising as I would have thought two transformations were plenty, but the third one took me by surprise. The scary part that left me on edge was the ending of the story that was left wide open and it seems that the ape may die or something may happen to the ape that isn't good.

Week 4 Lab

I decided to do the lab this week and I watched the Crash Course Myth Videos. I watched many of Crash Courses in high school and saw the opportunity to watch more and didn't hesitate to do so. The first video was funny as most of the crash courses are. The beginning was awesome with the slurpee comparison and it makes it easier and a lot of fun to listen to and learn from it. I love how they try to describe the word myth, and it was awesome to see them talk about it and try to explain how the word myth works.

The second episode was really interesting. I really enjoyed the discussion of theories throughout the video. i loved the art that was shown throughout the video. It was all awesome to look at and pause the video and look at it and try to fining meaning when it came to mythological ideas. The video does a great job with explaining the theories as it is a decently difficult subject to comprehend and learn.

The final video of the playlist  is awesome as the heroes of mythology are discussed and there isn't, usually, a great mythology story without a hero. Hero is a vague idea as the video discusses, but it is hard to have a story without that role being played. Hero's take roles throughout mythology that are different in almost every story. There are three parts to a hero's journey. Separation, trials and victories of initiation, and the return of the hero are the three most prominent categories of a hero's journey with many sub-categories throughout the three main ones.

Reading Notes: The Darkness, Part B

The second story that I read from the Adam & Eve collection is the story "The Darkness". The story begins with God speaking to Adam and God explaining the situation to Adam. God tells Adam that he will send him back to Earth due to Adam transgressing as an angel and being sent to the "darkness' which is Earth. The darkness may seem like a punishment as it sounds horrible and almost certain death, but God puts his own twist on it stating that it was a learning moment for Adam not to transgress and sin. The story continues with multiple segments of dialogue between God and Adam, but most of the talking was coming from God himself. TO me, it felt like it was more of a lecture towards Adam than it was dialogue back-in-forth which is interesting. Adam & Eve, by the end, are extremely sorrowful for their actions that has caused them to be in the position that they are. The couple is sent on a journey that must be fulfilled before they are allowed to return to the garden which is interesting that God is so hard on the couple. Forgiveness is a big part of religion and seeing God punish people for mistakes they have made is a different feeling that I am used to getting from dialogue of God.
This is sort of image I thought of when I heard about the darkness. A foggy and not totally dark with a chance to return to a normalcy. https://images.app.goo.gl/sKRZv8uZRaaS5tTq7

Reading Notes: The Punishment, Part A

I decided to choose the story "Punishment" from the Adam & Eve collection of stories. I knew, vaguely, the story of Adam & Eve and most of my knowledge was just basic plot lines.  The story is mostly dialogue which I am not a huge fan of, but the story does a fine job of setting the scene and describing the situation to a point of understanding for me. I enjoy the dialogue from the angels in the first couple paragraphs of the story. It gives the feel of a click in high school and to me that gives off the feel irony. Angels are supposed to be the caretakers of those on Earth, and be humble and helpful when it comes to situations that arise on Earth. The angels in this story are talking about Adam and wondering how he isn't dead yet. It makes some sense the angels are acting that way since God is the one that said Adam was going to perish if he stayed in the garden but it was interesting to see the angels act in that kind of way.
Another part of the story that was very entertaining was when the serpent was introduced. The fact that God gave Adam & Eve some time to figure out what they were going to do without punishment is weird. The serpent, who is now a villain, was given no second chance and was sentenced to be the villain the rest of its years. The serpent was determined to not be the only one that was singled out. the serpent's main target was Adam and the final two lines of the story are great lines and a great segway into the next chapter of the story of Adam & Eve

Feedback Strategies

One of the articles that I read was an article called "Why Do So Many Managers Avoid Giving Praise?". The article goes into detail of how managers go about feedback to their employees. Many managers saw that the negative comments were more effective and common than the positive comments. Managers lack of positive praise showed to have a better impact on the employee, when it comes to product, compared to positive feedback. In my opinion, the motive of negative feedback causes a reaction in the employees brain to improve. This is a loss of satisfaction and the need to improve to get to that point. The positive feedback would cause an acceptance of work and then quality drops significantly.
https://hbr.org/2017/05/why-do-so-many-managers-avoid-giving-praise
The other article that I read was "Be a Mirror: Give Readers Feedback That Fosters a Growth Mindset". This article was pretty much a article on commenting on others work and projects. Its' main goal was to get the point across that you need to be a mirror. It doesn't mean give them what they want to hear, but give them something to build on when it comes to their work. Positive feedback is good in writing, but there always needs to be a hint of negative, so the writer knows what to build on from the point that you gave. I really enjoyed the article because that is something I really need to work on when commenting. I got the positive feedback down, but I still need to be able to do the little negative hint to cause improvement in the work

Topic Research

I have decided to do a Dog Saga. This comes from the example storybook that was given called "Dog Diaries". I want to create a saga of my dog Jovi. I don't have many pictures of him since he lives at home, but he is my buddy and he deserves the spotlight. The name of the series will be Jovi: The Dog of All Dogs. Jovi is loving puppy that I wish I could have brought to Oklahoma with me, but my mother would not all it to happen. I have a couple story ideas in mind, and some are more realistic than others.
1. The Beginning: This will be an intro story of my dog. It was a crazy, cool journey as it was a surprise, to me, that Jovi came into my life. Jovi is a very special dog!
2. Sports Day: Jovi is really good at sports. He was recruited by the Top Dog (pun) University in the United States in multiple sports. Jovi has crazy vertical and amazing moves that you will have to read see the immaculate impact that he has.
3. Running for Office: Jovi has all skills necessary to become the next great President of the United States. He has the character and will power to have great change and have the nation prosper.

Week 3 Story: The KATostrophic Mistake

It was dark, gloomy night in the town of Fluffle, Illinois. There was a young man named Carl that called this small town his home. Carl had just began his senior year of high school but something was very wrong once he started class. Carl would stay away from everyone and wouldn't talk to anyone at all. Carl was the highlight of his class as he was brilliant and always cracking jokes to other students. What students didn't know was that Carl lost his mother and his precious cat, Gary. Gary was one of his only highlights when he was home. Carl's dad was always "at a friends" and never was around Carl. Carl was in dark place and nothing could replace Gary and the hole that was in his heart from his lost.

Carl began to miss school days at a time. He would show up about once a week and his teachers and peers began to become concerned. Eventually someone told the counselor that Carl needed to be talked to and see what was going on. "What has been going on?" said the counselor. Carl explained his story and just said he needed to be home to take care of his house and other responsibilities. The counselor released Carl without hesitation and decided that he was fit to go on with what he is doing. Carl returned home and began on his master plan.

Carl began his plan to bring back Gary. Carl would begin to construct a life-size version of Gary and the process would take a while but it was worth the wait, for a while at least. Carl would eventually create Gary and Carl's mood made a drastic improvement. Gary II was perfect. He was exactly like the original and even better in some aspects. Gary II would continue to do everything that Carl's heart desired until one fateful day.

Gary II escaped Carl's home and it was the beginning of the end. Gary II was introduced to the world and many people saw the problem and the scary part of Gary II. This show of technology proved that anything could be created and the fact that robots could be more now than future. Gary II had a slight malfunction once he got out of the house and began to reek havoc on Fluffle. Carl began to see the news pop up on social media of a cat causing so much harm to a small town. Carl had to do that unthinkable and destroy such a precious creation that was meant to help and not harm. Carl found Gary II and destroyed the robot with a few hits. Carl was sad over the fact that he had just destroyed his precious robot but he realized the people and real living things are the way to go and make yourself cope with loss.

Author's Note: I took the idea from "The Rabbi's Bogey-man" and put my own twist. I add a tragic backstory to my creator compared to the rabbi just being a outcast and unwanted. The rabbi story has a lot of elements I used in my own story from the reason to create the robot to the ending. Both stories have the destruction of the robots and the main character become the hero after the robot is gone. My story is a story of triumph and the thought and want to survive the fight against depression. There is always someone or something that can help you cope and you are never alone no matter how deep you are.

Reading Notes: Jewish Fairy Tales Part B

For part B, I decided on the story of "The Rabbi's Bogey-Man". The story begins as all stories do with a little background information and a little foreshadowing. I am a big fan of the foreshadowing as it gives me, the reader, a chance to do some thinking about the story and what I can expect or even wonder about the next move of the story. The people of Rabbi Lion's town were scared of the rabbi. People through out the town saw that blue and red flames could be seen in his windows at night, and it was believed he was calling demons and witches. This story has a lovely start as the main character is seen as the villain in his town and I love the fact that he is portrayed in that fashion. The rabbi then proceeded to make a creature that was a robotic woman to aid the rabbi. The story continues as the town finds out about the robot and the king wanted the robot to be turned over, but the rabbi convinced the king to let the rabbi keep. The story then takes a classic turn when the rabbi's creation turns bad and begins to try to attack the synagogue and break in. The rabbi turns hero and destroys the monster and was left in pieces. The rabbi kept his triumph and told the story for years to come. I love stories like this as the bad guy, in the beginning, proves himself/herself to be a person of good and help those who thought he was a villain. Rabbi Lion seemed he was just a weird, old man that was creating robots for himself, but he actually showed that what he does can help the town as well as he is prepared to destroy and take down his creation if need be.

Reading Notes: Jewish Fairy Tales, Part A

For part A of the Jewish Fairy Tales, I read "The Quarrel of Cat and Dog". I chose the Jewish Fairy Tales list as it sounded like a unit that would give me a cool and different perspective on fairy tales and the storytelling in Israel at this time. The story starts like any other story with a small backstory, and then, all of a sudden, everything goes South and causes turmoil. The friends, the cat and dog, were best buddies then the Winter began to cause a rift between the two. The story continues with arguments and that figuring out of the rift and how destroyed the relationship was. There is one instance that I would like to bring up and that is when the cat comes to Adam for help. It seem generic, but when the cat asks Adam to do something about the dog it is crazy to thing about. The cat goes up to Adam complaining about how the dog had been forbidden from the premises. It gives the feel of a divorce or a really hard break that is occurring between the two animals. It does make it easy to choose and let Adam know as the cat can talk and communicate with great accuracy with Adam. It made me chuckle a bit as a cat is controlling the owners decisions and that will never happen in my life but it does in this story. It was a very interesting concept of a dog and cat arguing and making decisions compared to the stories with just people. The aspect of animals gives readers a new thing to focus and want to read as animals are a lot more fun to read about. They are really easy to relate two as well as animals can change moods and feeling very quickly and most of the time authors want to have multiple ways to help engage and audience.
Dog and Cat just chilling at home. https://images.app.goo.gl/t8szX3XZBWAittx38

Feedback Thoughts

The first article that I read was the article on the Seven Ways to Crush Self-Doubt. The article is a decent article that has many tips to combat the self-doubt that many people have in society today. I have had issues with self-doubt, especially in high school, but college has aided me in taking care of those characteristics to almost nothing. The biggest point that effected me was the very first one in the article. The point was "Don't Compare Yourself to Others". This is a huge problem for many of people across the world as we are always trying to be others and compare our lives to others. this article opened my eyes to a few things I do and I am thankful I read it and will try to apply it to my life.
http://www.spencerauthor.com/seven-ways-to-crush-self-doubt/
The other article id why rejection hurts so much. Rejection is something that everyone has to deal with in their life no matter how perfect your life seems to be or is. There are the lucky few that only face it a few times but those people are few and far between. Rejection is something that can take a massive effect on someone no matter how minimal it is. The rejection of something is like having a perfect plan and being foiled by something. Rejection is one of the worlds problems that isn't really a problem. Rejection is a personal problem that is mostly a mind thing with people that causes stress, depression and other mental problems.

Topic Brainstorm

Weather Gods: This weather gods subject really intrigues me for a few reasons. I originally came down to Oklahoma for a meteorological degree but have since switched. The weather gods are interesting characters that have played many of roles throughout history. There are so many weather gods and the wide range of characters and stories that can be told from then are very enticing.

Dog: The thought of a dog story is really funny to think about. Dogs can do so many things in a story and series of stories. Dogs have many role throughout mythology and the variety and opportunity that a dog character holds is coll to think about as I have a lot of ideas for stories.

Cookbook: Food is always on everyone's mind. Food is something that everyone can get behind and want to eat all the time. Food throughout mythology has played a decent role. Whether it was a golden apple or a simple meal that changes the outcome. Food has always played a major role. Food has a lot of variety so there are many of ways that it can be used throughout a story.

Pirates: Pirates are one of my most favorite character types in any story. They always have an interesting role as they can play the villain, hero or even just a common bystander. Pirates seemed just fantasy to me when I was younger, but as I grew up I realized the role they actually had across the world. They weren't exactly the same looking with the creative and extravagant outfits but they still had the sane niche as they did in the movies.
